Tonight we talked again about the fall of man in Genesis 3. One interesting question came up about the whole story of Adam, Eve and the trees in the Garden. We the trees literal trees, did this story literally happen? Or is this a figurative story meant to explain the separation between God and humanity in terms that are simple and easy to understand? Is it necessary to believe one or the other? If we believe that it’s literal, why? Are there reasons that the rest of our faith rest on? If it’s figurative, metaphorical, or alegorical, how does that affect our faith? Does it change anything? What do you think?

i think its a figurative story to explain things…i dont believe there was an actual tree full of smurf berries:). i think its the easiest way God could get through our thick human skulls ha.
i agree with neil
i think that that was a metaphorical story just so we could understand something greater and there really wasnt a tree of edan
Is there any reason that it should be a literal story though? I mean, who gets to decide what is literal and figurative? Can we just say that all of the stories that don’t quite make sense to us are figurative? Like David and Goliath? Or is there a point where we have to say, “all things are possible with God and this could really have happened.”
yeah thats a good point too. I geuss it just doesnt seem that it would be literal because you think god wouldnt base something on a tree but it could very well have been true.
